vs Lost Pixel

Lost Pixel is an open-source visual regression tool with an optional hosted platform. Claims about Lost Pixel come from its introduction, its configuration reference and its mask reference, checked on 2026-11-03.

Lost Pixel has two parts: an open-source engine and a SaaS platform. The engine takes screenshots of Storybook, Ladle, Histoire, web pages, or images you produce yourself, for example with Playwright or Cypress. It compares them against baselines kept in .lostpixel/baseline/ by default. The platform is used with an apiKey.

Sources for this project: vis() options, how snapshots work.

  • It supports more frameworks and plain web pages, not only Storybook and Vitest.
  • It has a hosted platform for teams.
  • It runs inside your existing Vitest or Storybook test run, so there is no second runner.
  • It takes snapshots of your tests automatically and per theme.
  • It offers SSIM comparison.
  • It shows failures in the Vis panel.

Choose it when you need to cover Ladle, Histoire or plain pages.

Choose it when your tests already run in Vitest Browser Mode or the Storybook Vitest addon.

Baselines are not shared, because the folders and names differ. Add the addon or plugin, create baselines on the first run, then remove the Lost Pixel step from CI.
